Artist Research #2

Jennifer Maestre is an artist that uses pencils as a way to create sculpture pieces. She was originally inspired by the sea urchin. To make the sculptures she takes hundreds of pencils and cuts them into 1-inch sections. She then drills holes into them and actually sews the pencils together.

Springtime Tall Tale
19 x 6 x 5.5 in

Asteridae
5 x 24 x 24 in.

Seethe
9 x 13 x 14 in.

I think this artist's work is really fantastic. Not only is she using pencils for a medium other than drawing, she is making these natural and organic forms that are visually interesting. You almost want to touch them, despite the fact that they are sharp and pointy.
