opening at the SooVac

Soo Visual Arts Center is proud to present two new exhibitions opening Saturday, September 18th, 6-9PM:

In the Main Gallery:  Systematics
Featuring work by Liz Miller & R. Justin Stewart
September 18 – October 31, 2010
Opening Reception: Saturday September 18th, 6 – 9PM

There are few aspects of modern society that aren’t connected to encoded systems. It is the thin webbed matrix that constructs communication between all facets of civilization.  The intricacies of these systems also lay bare the multitude of ways in which we create rifts in understanding between each other and within ourselves. Systematics will explore how artists Liz Miller and R. Justin Stewart map out visual overstimulation, examining the entropy and chaos of how society consumes information. Miller and Stewart both pursue ubiquitous and ordinary materials that they imbue with new meaning by altering their contextual origins.  The forms create frameworks to disseminate their unique language of imagery; allowing the art to transcend the zip ties and craft store felt that gives it structure.

Soo Local:  Alternative Futures
Featuring work by Allen Brewer & Pamela Valfer
September 18 – October 31, 2010
Opening Reception: Saturday September 18th, 6 – 9PM

Things discarded and forgotten are inspiration for Allen Brewer and Pamela Valfer; their exhibition Alternate Futures will explore the complexities of exhuming cultural ephemera to imprint new relevancy and meaning to things abandoned by time. Their work will explore an alternate path and future history, from refuse to venerated relic Brewer and Valfer assemble drawings and sculpture that provide a convincing argument for re-envisioning the past, present and future.
