Artist #3: Wendell Castle
Wendell Castle is the one famous
furniture designer in United States and a leading figure in American Craft. He
was born in November 6, 1932 in Emporia, Kansas. In 1958, he graduated with industrial
design major in 1958 and he got a Master of Fine Arts in 1961 from the
University of Kansas.
"I
don't see myself as part of tradition, and I don't see myself as part of the
activity in American furniture," Wendell Castle says, but as an artist and
craftsperson, he explains, "You break new ground in different ways."

Two-Headed Table (1969) of gel-coated,
fiberglass-reinforced plastic, capitalizing on material advances of the era.
The
brand-new Curious Paradox (2012), a collection of nine tables, is a highlight
of Castle’s current show at Barry Friedman Ltd.
Angel Heart (2010), made of bleached mahogany,;
is one of a series of; rocking chairs.
Dark Wish Chair (2012), measuring 5 feet
wide, is made of ash and finished with oil.
